In the article “NASA’s Self-Driving Perseverance Mars Rover ‘Takes the Wheel’” (2021), highlights the capability of its navigation system which is enhanced and improved as compared to the previous navigation systems of the predecessor’s rover. Navigating on mars is hazardous as pathway taken by the rover can lead to trenches, sand dunes and large rocks, in addition, the article said that the rovers teams can’t just control the rover with a joystick, as there was the delay of radio signal between earth and mars, so the rover will take charge driving itself by using the rover navigation systems called AutoNAV, where it is an enhanced system which makes 3D maps of the terrain, identifies hazards, and plans a route around any obstacles.

One of the feature that was improve from the Curiosity was AutoNav software, Firstly, in the article “NASA's Perseverance rover is driving itself around Mars using an enhanced auto-navigation system” (2021) said that the enhance Autonav is able to performing 3D mapping of upcoming terrain, hazard identification, and trajectory planning for obstacle avoidance. Vandi Verma (2021), said the rover is also able to “think about the autonomous drive while its wheels are turning." The article also said that with the improve AutoNav Perseverance might be able to hit top speeds of 393 feet (120 meters) per hour which is approximately six times faster than Curiosity, where it was able to reach 66 feet per hour. With these improvements, Perseverance can drive through these more complex terrains instead of going around them.

Other features that was improve from the predecessor’s rover like Spirit and Opportunity was the Rover Compute Element (RCE), while some of the RCE job is to register signs of the rover health, like checking temperatures, particularly in the rover body, and adjusting temperature control accordingly, ensuring that the rover is able to communicate throughout the surface mission, recording power generation and power storage data throughout the Mars sol (a Martian day) to decide what new activities can be started or completed, and then finally scheduling and preparing for communication sessions with Earth or with local Mars orbiters. In addition, the article “NASA’s Self-Driving Perseverance Mars Rover ‘Takes the Wheel’” (2021) said that current Perseverance rover has two computers which it is able employ one of its computers just for navigation on the surface and its main computer can devote itself to the many other tasks that keep the rover healthy and active.

However, even with the improve and enhance auto-navigation systems, human aid is still needed to be involved in the rover’s navigation, like planning an initial navigation route for the rover to executes and move according to the planned route.

In conclusion, the rover navigation system consist of many features to make its auto functions work and to navigate on the Martian surface.
